The Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU) is the apex body of Vice Chancellors in Nigeria, established to promote cooperation, consultation, and shared leadership among university leaders. It serves as a strategic platform for advancing the quality, relevance, and sustainability of higher education in Nigeria through policy engagement, peer learning, advocacy, and institutional collaboration. Over the years, the Committee has played a significant role in strengthening the Nigerian University System by fostering dialogue with government, regulatory agencies, development partners, and other stakeholders. Its work continues to focus on key areas such as university governance, academic excellence, research and innovation, funding sustainability, quality assurance, digital transformation, and institutional development.
At the heart of the Committee’s activities is the CVCNU General Conference and Assembly, its flagship annual gathering and the most important forum of university leaders in Nigeria. The Conference brings together Vice Chancellors, Pro-Chancellors, principal officers, policymakers, development partners, industry leaders, and scholars to reflect on contemporary issues affecting higher education and to collectively shape strategic directions for the sector.Hosted on a rotational basis by member universities across the country, the Conference has over the years become a strong tradition of intellectual engagement and institutional visibility. Past editions have been hosted by universities such as Afe Babalola University, Redeemer’s University, Kano University of Science and Technology, Baze University, among others, each contributing unique perspectives and thematic focus to the development of the university system.
Conference themes have consistently mirrored the evolving realities of higher education, addressing issues such as revitalization of university education, governance and leadership, sustainable financing, innovation and digital transformation, research excellence, and the role of universities in national development. The deliberations of the Conference have continued to yield communiqués and recommendations that influence policy and strengthen institutional practice across the sector.
Now in its 37th edition, the CVCNU General Conference and Assembly is proudly hosted by the University of Ilorin. The Conference, themed “Building Resilient Universities for Nigeria”, provides a timely platform for reflection on the capacity of universities to withstand emerging disruptions while sustaining excellence in teaching, research, innovation, and service. It also offers an opportunity for leaders across the higher education landscape to engage with strategies for institutional resilience, sustainability, and global competitiveness in an increasingly complex knowledge environment.
